Tell me about your work? What are you currently working on? How is this different from past projects?
Over 2 months this summer, I
challenged myself to recreate thirty small paintings of interior spaces pulled
from different artists painting from 1750-1950. Through this process of
immersing myself into art history, I hoped to find similarities and differences
in ways of seeing and making space that I could engage and alter in my
renditions. I have translated the subjects and compositions into my own playful
and sometimes grotesque style where boundaries are lacking and shapes dissolve
into one another allowing form to become space. Through placement of color,
line and form, I have attempted to shift the composition and planes of each
painting to an uncanny new position. The small size of the paintings (4” x 6”
or 6” x 4”) was the biggest change from my previous work.
Twenty
of these interiors can be seen in the “For the Love of Paint” show at Flow Art
Space opening Friday, September 14th from 6-9 PM.

How did you decide to become an artist?
When I was very young, my grandfather told me I couldn’t be an artist until I picked and dried enough of the Orange Hawkweed wildflower (also called Indian Paintbrush) I have been picking them ever since. I decided to seriously pursue art as a career two weeks into my undergraduate degree when I realized how many chemistry classes I would need to take in my previous major. So far, that has been one of the better decisions I have made in my life.

What was the best advice given to you as an artist?
Paint what you are passionate about, something that can keep your attention for a while, something that you can’t get out of your mind. Paint something you really want to get to know and figure out, paint it every day.
Many
artists struggle to find ways to sell their art. How do you sell your
work? How do you market yourself?
I sell art through my blog and Facebook. Tumblr has been a great, easy to use and free marketing tool.
